About Us
Whitfield Farm and its 226 acres of prime Gloucestershire land has been in our family for 60 years. Jim and Rosemary took over in 1964 and we have had full organic status for the past ten years.
We always wanted to farm the ‘proper’ way, without chemicals and fertilisers to increase yield, just using the variable English climate and our skill with the old fashioned methods. We feel privileged that we are producing grass fed beef of such a high standard but it is not just luck that has given us our long standing and loyal customer base!
No concentrated cattle food is brought onto the farm, we solely feed grass. Straw is used for bedding and even this is put back onto the land as compost after the winter. We do not use concentrates of any form to fatten the animals or speed up the fattening process. In the winter we feed silage or hay, most of which is produced on the farm in the summer months and in the summer the animals run in various herds across the farm.
Instead of fertilisers we use clover (as illustrated) and the rotational system of farming; instead of sprays and chemicals we have developed our own perma-culture system which attracts its own bees, birds and natural food chain systems. We have managed a natural and uncomplicated way of farming through our years of experience; we are proud of being Farmers - there are very few of us left.
We chose Aberdeen Angus Cross for practical reasons; they are hardy and produce evenly fat distributed meat. We currently have over 170 animals on the farm, the bull runs with the herd which ranges from newborns to matriarchs. Experience and careful observation tells us which animal is ‘ready’ and we select on an individual basis to ensure that our standard runs throughout. Every part of the process is done locally from the slaughter through to the butchery, every joint can therefore be traced back to individual animals. We help them into the world and we see it as part of our job to see them out of it in as quiet and as stress-free a way as possible. In all cases we have seen each animal born, they mean more to us than cash in the bank.
What more can we say, it is an extremely hard way of life but so much more enjoyable when it is carbon friendly and natural.
